Leadership Isn't a Title
There is a persistent myth in many organisations that leadership begins when you are finally given the title, the budget, and the direct reports. Until then, you are just waiting your turn.
But authority and leadership are entirely different mechanisms. Authority is granted from above. It allows you to enforce compliance. Leadership, on the other hand, is practiced. It is the active choice to take responsibility for the health of the people around you and the integrity of the work you share.
You do not need a title to notice when a process is broken and propose a fix. You do not need a title to de-escalate tension in a meeting or to ask the obvious question everyone else is avoiding. True leadership is often just the willingness to go first—especially when going first feels risky.
